The Ningbo Women's and Children's Hospital (Ningbo Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, Ningbo Children's Medical Center) is a tertiary grade A maternal and child health care hospital that features well-developed functions, complete facilities, advanced technology, standardized services, and distinctive characteristics. Its main specialties are gynecology, obstetrics, and pediatrics. The hospital integrates medical treatment, healthcare, teaching, scientific research, prevention, emergency, rehabilitation, and health education. It undertakes the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases in women and children in Ningbo City and its surrounding areas, as well as the rescue work for critical illnesses. Additionally, it is responsible for the technical guidance of maternal and child health care services throughout the city.
The hospital originated as the Ningbo Regional Hospital established in 1975 and was renamed Ningbo Mingzhou Hospital in 1983. In 1985, it integrated with the pediatric department of Ningbo First Hospital and the obstetrics and gynecology department of Ningbo Second Hospital to form the Ningbo Women's and Children's Hospital. In 1993, Ningbo Red Cross Hospital was added, and in 1998, Ningbo Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital was established. It serves as an affiliated non-directly-governed hospital of Ningbo University Medical College and is also a teaching hospital for more than ten medical colleges and universities in Zhejiang Province, Jiangsu Province, Anhui Province, Inner Mongolia, and other provinces and cities. On January 18, 2014, the northern district of the hospital commenced operations, marking the new era of "one hospital with two districts."
The hospital currently has 2,129 official staff members, including 413 senior professionals. It comprises 21 functional departments and administers both districts with unified management and personnel deployment.
The southern district of the hospital is located at No. 339 Liuting Street, Haishu District, Ningbo City. It covers an area of 42,000 square meters with a building area of about 73,300 square meters. The hospital has 1,200 approved beds and 1,027 open beds, equipped with a range of modern large-scale medical equipment such as Philips 1.5T MRI, Philips 16-slice CT, Toshiba DSA, Philips dual-panel DR, Philips IE33 cardiac 3D ultrasound, VOLUSON E8 abdominal 3D ultrasound, high-end color Doppler ultrasound systems, GE mammography units, Shimadzu digital gastrointestinal machines, Dräger Primus anesthesia workstations, SARNS extracorporeal circulation machines, neonatal central monitoring systems, high-frequency ventilators, STORZ laparoscopes, hysteroscopes, laser membrane breakers, OLYMPUS AU2700 automatic biochemical analyzers, automatic immune analyzers, and chromosome analysis systems.
The southern district houses 25 inpatient wards, including gynecology, obstetrics, pediatric internal medicine, pediatric surgery, breast surgery, MICU, etc. It offers 38 clinical departments and over 50 specialty and specialist outpatient services, as well as 7 medical technology departments like pharmacy, laboratory, ultrasound, electrophysiology, imaging, blood transfusion (blood bank), and sterilization supply room. Emergency services in pediatric internal medicine, gynecology, obstetrics, and pediatric surgery are available around the clock, and special needs clinics are established based on patient demand. In 2021, the hospital handled 2,387,647 outpatient and emergency visits, discharged 77,767 patients, and delivered 12,075 babies.
The hospital possesses key disciplines such as "Perinatal Medicine," which is jointly established by the province and city, municipal key disciplines in "Pediatrics" and "Gynecology," as well as municipal key laboratories in "Maternal-Fetal Medicine" and "Reproductive Medicine." "Pediatrics" is one of the first provincial regional centers for specialized diseases, and in 2014, "Gynecology" became a specialized disease center for the Eastern Zhejiang region. "Gynecologic Malignancies," "Pediatric Kidney Diseases," "Pediatric Rheumatic Immune Diseases," and the "Reproductive Medicine Center" were among the first batch of city-level clinical specialty construction units. The hospital hosts five city-level management centers including newborn disease screening, prenatal screening and diagnosis, obstetric quality control, eugenic testing, and maternal and child health quality control, as well as eight city-level service centers for comprehensive prevention of birth defects, reproductive medicine, critical pediatric care, critical neonatal care, critical pregnant women care, breast cancer screening training, cervical cancer screening training, and gynecological endoscopy. The medical level of obstetrics and gynecology, as well as pediatrics, leads the city, while all indicators of maternal and child health are at the forefront nationally. The hospital's medical and scientific research capabilities continue to strengthen: Pediatric internal medicine has accumulated rich clinical experience in the rescue treatment of critical neonates and extremely low birth weight infants; cardiovascular internal medicine was the first in the city to carry out left and right duct angiography and interventional treatment for congenital heart disease in children; assisted reproductive medicine has been approved by the Ministry of Health, with improving technical standards; gynecology has achieved high levels in extensive hysterectomy for uterine cancer, pelvic lymph node dissection, radical ovarian cancer surgery, vulvar cancer excision, pelvic floor reconstruction, and minimally invasive endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of gynecological diseases; obstetrics undertakes the treatment of high-risk and complicated pregnancies in the city, effectively managing cases of pregnancy with heart disease, heart failure, severe hepatitis, acute fatty liver, pre-eclampsia, elevated liver enzymes and thrombocytopenia syndrome, placenta previa accreta, amniotic fluid embolism, etc.; surgery has made new breakthroughs in neonatal surgery, urology, orthopedic correction, scald treatment, and pediatric congenital heart disease surgical treatment by thoracic surgery, as well as improvement in laparoscopic diagnosis and treatment techniques for abdominal diseases such as pyloric hypertrophy, Hirschsprung's disease, and Meckel's diverticulum by general surgery; breast surgery adopts a "comprehensive treatment" model reflecting personalized and humanized treatment concepts; traditional Chinese medicine departments in gynecology and pediatrics are uniquely featured; the imaging department's interventional catheter treatment is increasingly applied.
The new inpatient building of the southern district was relocated and put into use in August 2010, significantly improving inpatient conditions. The pediatric building started construction in 2013 and began trial operation on June 30, 2016.
The northern district of the hospital is located at No. 266 Cishui West Street, Cicheng New Town, Jiangbei District, Ningbo City, south of Yuci Road and west of Cixiao Avenue. It was built with an investment of 550 million RMB from Jiangbei District Government and Ningbo Municipal Health Bureau. It occupies a total land area of 100 acres and a total construction area of 64,055 square meters, with phase one consisting of a comprehensive building, infection building, and administrative building. Equipped with modern large-scale medical equipment such as Philips 1.5T MRI, Philips 16-slice CT, Philips DSA, Philips dual-panel DR, Shimadzu and Spanish SEDECAL mobile DR, Philips IE ELITE cardiac 3D ultrasound, GE E8 3D ultrasound, Shimadzu digital gastrointestinal machine, GE anesthesia workstation, Philips neonatal central monitoring system, Dräger high-frequency ventilator, STORZ laparoscope, hysteroscope, Siemens automatic biochemical analyzer, and more.
The northern district focuses on the development positioning of "major specialties, minor comprehensiveness," highlighting the diagnosis and treatment of children's diseases and neonatal care, as well as characteristic services in gynecology, obstetrics, and reproductive medicine. Minor comprehensive departments include internal medicine, surgery, traditional Chinese medicine, and according to needs, ENT, dentistry, dermatovenereology, ophthalmology, etc., providing efficient, convenient, and high-quality medical services for children and women in the city, as well as basic medical services for residents around Jiangbei Cicheng. The Reproductive Medicine Center officially settled in the northern district on May 13, 2018.
The northern district currently has 13 inpatient wards, including pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, integrated internal medicine, pediatric infectious diseases, pediatric surgery, etc., with 17 high-grade obstetric rooms (suites), 600 approved beds, and 457 open beds. There are 20 clinical departments and 35 specialty outpatient clinics, as well as special outpatient clinics for reproduction consultation (second child), infertility, cardiac ultrasound, etc., and six medical technology departments including pharmacy, laboratory, ultrasound, electrophysiology, imaging, sterilization supply room, along with 24-hour emergency services in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and internal medicine.
