The School of Basic Medical Sciences at Ningbo University was originally established in 1998 as four departments responsible for basic medical education. In September 2021, in order to further enhance the level of basic medical education and research at Ningbo University, the School of Basic Medical Sciences was officially established. The school now consists of five departments: Department of Morphology, Department of Pathogenic Biology and Immunology, Department of Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology. It includes administrative offices such as the Basic Medical Experiment Center and the Basic Medical Education Office; it owns several research centers including the Ningbo University Behavioral Neuroscience Center, Ningbo University Diabetes Research Center, Ningbo City Medical Molecular Diagnostic Center, Ningbo University Biomedical Engineering Research Center, etc., mainly responsible for basic medical teaching and research tasks for students in clinical medicine and preventive medicine.
The School of Basic Medical Sciences has established a first-level master's degree program in basic medicine; it has one national teaching team, four national courses, and eight provincial courses; it has one provincial key laboratory, ten municipal key laboratories, and nine innovation teams at or above the municipal level. The faculty members have presided over 26 national projects (2 of which are key projects) and 47 provincial and ministerial projects in the past five years, with a total research funding of more than 25 million yuan; they have won 4 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, authorized 58 invention patents, and published over 240 high-quality research papers.
Through active introduction of high-level talents and strengthening of faculty training, the School of Basic Medical Sciences now has a strong and rigorous academic team. This includes 67 full-time teachers and 11 auxiliary staff members, among whom there are 27 with senior professional titles, 16 with associate senior professional titles; 16 doctoral supervisors, and 32 master's supervisors. Two full-time teachers receive special allowances from the State Council, one is a provincial teaching master, and more than 30 people have been selected into various provincial and city talent projects. By strengthening exchanges and cooperation with affiliated hospitals and research institutions, the school has formed multiple research innovation teams with distinct characteristics, focusing on areas such as the pathophysiological mechanisms and drug interventions of drug addiction, Alzheimer's disease, and depression, exploration of the mechanisms of liver inflammatory diseases and metabolic diseases, the pathogenesis and prevention of vector-borne viral infections, reconstruction of artificial esophagus and bone (cartilage) regeneration, the molecular genetic relationship between non-coding RNA and tumors, etc. The school owns a second-level biosecurity laboratory, SPF level animal experiment platform, and nearly 50 million yuan of experimental equipment and facilities, providing a guarantee for talent training and scientific research.
The School of Basic Medical Sciences actively expands domestic and international cooperation and exchange channels. It has successively established academic exchanges and student exchanges with institutions such as the University of South Carolina in the United States, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Angers in France, University College London in the UK, and the Chinese University of Hongkong.
