The Marine Biological Medicine Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Base, approved in August 2016, is a national-level international cooperative research platform, also known as the "Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Base for Advanced Disciplines in Universities (111 Plan)", jointly funded by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. The base relies on the world's leading marine drug research institution - Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, gradually forming a leading platform for the innovation and development of marine biological medicine and talent training.
Facing the major demands of people's life and health, serving the national marine strategy, and focusing on the key scientific and technological issues of the "blue pharmacy" research and development, the base has formed three main research directions. (1) Exploration of marine medicinal biological resources: building a distinctive marine biological resource library, discovering marine drug lead compounds with novel structures and biological activities, and conducting efficient preparation and industrialization research of high-value active substances from the sea; (2) Innovative drug research and development: focusing on phosphorus-containing drugs, carrying out research on the pharmacological mechanism, chemical synthesis, and structure-activity relationship of drug lead molecules, developing innovative drugs with independent intellectual property rights; (3) Development of bottleneck technologies for the marine health industry and drug research and development: carrying out research on marine microorganisms and toxin detection techniques with significant application prospects, as well as drug analysis and detection technology research and development. Through these research directions, the base aims to promote the development of innovative marine drugs, accelerate the industrialization of marine health products and technologies, and facilitate the transformation and application of biomedical technology achievements.
