The "Health Sciences and Communication Skills" program is a short-term study abroad initiative designed jointly by the English Language Center and the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Adelaide, Australia, specifically for medical students from China. Its aim is to familiarize students with the Australian healthcare system and enhance their skills in patient assessment and decision-making through an engaging, case-based medical education model. Additionally, the program will significantly improve students' professional language abilities through high-level medical English courses, thereby boosting their confidence in conducting medical research, writing relevant articles, or delivering professional presentations.

Course Content:
The program aims to achieve several key learning objectives:
l Enhance medical professional English communication skills.
l Experience the structural framework of medical education in Australian universities.
l Master the search and application of online medical databases.
l Understand the dynamics of doctor-patient relationships in Australia.
l Improve diagnostic, treatment, and patient management skills through group exercises.
l Familiarize with the healthcare systems and operations in South Australia and globally.
The four-week program totals 74 hours of instructional time. In the first week, students will engage in a 20-hour general English course to quickly adapt to an all-English academic environment and prepare for the subsequent three weeks.
The remaining three weeks comprise 54 hours of instruction, including:
l Medical English and Communication (approximately 27 hours): Emphasizing medical terminology to meet the practical needs of communicating in English within a medical context, enhancing confidence in communication.
l Medical Case Teaching (approximately 18 hours): Using case-based group learning under the guidance of faculty members from the Faculty of Medicine, students gain valuable practical experience, enhancing problem-solving and decision-making skills in a professional medical setting.
l Simulation Exercises and Visits (6 hours): Experiencing Adelaide University's state-of-the-art medical facilities, visiting medical laboratories, participating in simulation exercises, and touring the Pathology Museum.
l Medical Professional Lectures (3 hours): To better understand the case teaching content, two lectures are planned on topics such as diabetes and the Australian healthcare system.
Students will receive an official student ID from The University of Adelaide, granting them access to campus facilities and educational resources like libraries, gyms, and activity centers during the program. They will also have opportunities to participate in cultural and social activities organized by the language center, including coffee social events, wildlife park visits, board games, excursions, and interactions with local students.
Accommodation will be arranged with host families managed by the university, including meals, allowing students to immerse themselves in local culture and rapidly improve their language skills.
Program Outcomes:
Students will be under the academic management and assessment of The University of Adelaide. Assessment methods include:
l Annotated reading assignments.
l Listening comprehension and note-taking.
l Writing assignments.
l 5-minute oral presentations.
l Class participation.
Upon successful completion of all courses and passing the academic assessments, students will receive an official transcript and certificate of study from The University of Adelaide.
Program Costs:
Total program cost: Approximately RMB 36,500.
Included in the fee: tuition, accommodation (including three meals and airport transfers), program activities, medical and accident insurance, and program service fees.
Not included: international airfare, visa fees, personal expenses.
Application Process:
Eligibility requirements: Good foundation in English, equivalent to IELTS 5.5, CET-4 450, CET-6 430, Duolingo (above 90), or Versant (41-45) (fast results available online).
Application process: Online registration through Ningbo University's information portal under "Student Study Abroad," selecting "Short-Term Research Internship Program – Faculty Level Project – Medical Department," and submitting an online application.
Eligible students can apply for financial support according to "Ningbo University Regulations on Financial Aid for Study Abroad Exchanges" (Appendix 1) and may apply for additional funding of RMB 5,000 according to "Regulations on Financial Aid for Study Abroad Exchanges for Students from the Medical Faculty of Ningbo University" (Appendix 2).
